Panama is elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council
After obtaining 183 of 190 votes, Panama achieved a position as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, for the period 2025-2026, in the elections held during the 78th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN).
After learning of the country’s choice, Foreign Minister Janaina Tewaney Mencomo thanked the team at the Permanent Mission of Panama to the United Nations, the Panamanian diplomatic corps and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Directorate of International Organizations and Conferences.
“It has been a grueling task for Panamanian foreign policy led by President Laurentino Cortizo. It is a great challenge, especially in these critical geopolitical times,” said Panamanian Foreign Minister Tewaney.
Starting January 1, 2025, Panama will assume a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the sixth time, and on this occasion it achieves this with the highest percentage of votes obtained in the five occasions it has been a member.
The country has already participated as a non-permanent member in 1958-1959; 1972-1973; 1976-1977; 1981-1982 and 2007-2008, and among the central issues that Panama would bring to that forum is the promotion of peace.
Panama also congratulated Denmark, Pakistan, Greece and Somalia, which were also elected, and hopes to work constructively in the United Nations Security Council in the 2025-2026 period.
